Bad news for Manchester United as another key player joins injury list
Manchester United have more to worry about following recent reports that England international Harry Maguire is set to spend some time out injured.
The dominating defender joined the Old Trafford outfit in the summer of 2019 and has featured in all Premier League games so far this season. Maguire, who has been handed the captain's armband several times this season has commanded the United backline and tried to justify his huge price tag.
However, during the FA Cup clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, the former Leicester man struggled to continue after a collision with Adama Traore. Subsequently, he missed the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City on Tuesday and was forced to watch his side suffer an embarrasing defeat from the sidelines.
The Red Devils fell to a 3-1 defeat at home thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva, Riyadh Mahrez, and an own goal from Andreas Pereira. Marcus Rashford pulled one back to keep the 2017 Carabao Cup champions in the tie ahead of a crucial second leg clash at the Etihad on the 29th of January.
Speaking at the end of the game, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played down the seriousness of Maguire's injury and expressed his belief that the defender would be back soon. He said: “We don’t know. It is not going to be a long term one. But I don’t think he will be ready for the weekend. Let’s see.”
However, the Daily Telegraph claims that Maguire has ‘suffered a torn hip muscle’ and ‘appears to have aggravated the problem’ by playing on against Wolves, resulting in a ‘sustained spell on sidelines’
Maguire’s replacement in the 3-1 defeat to City was Phil Jones, who had not started a game since the 3-3 draw with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in November. The former England international was seen limping in the second half, but Solskjaer also played down any fears of an injury.
“Jones had cramp. It was his first 90 minutes for a while, but he came through it. It was just cramp,”the Manchester United boss revealed.
Harry Maguire joins a growing list of injured Manchester United players which includes Scot McTominay and Paul Pogba. Unted fans will be hoping that these players who are undoubtedly the best in their respective positions would be back soon enough to challenge for the Premier League top four in the business end of the season.
